About

Dr. Christian Sandström is one of the leading international voices on the economic and technological effects of the green transition. He began his career as an engineer and economist, completing his PhD in 2010 with a thesis on disruptive innovation based on historical studies of technological change in industries such as cameras, calculators and video surveillance. This early work earned him a prestigious three-year research scholarship from one of Sweden’s major academic foundations, awarded to promising scholars at the beginning of their careers.

Following his doctorate, Christian held academic positions at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg and later at Jönköping International Business School. During this time, he became widely recognised for both his research and his teaching, receiving multiple awards for pedagogical excellence. He has also been a visiting scholar at several international institutions, including Victoria University in New Zealand, ETH Zurich in Switzerland and the University of Cambridge.

Later in his career, Christian developed a strong interest in industrial policy and the green transition. His research explores the dynamics of what he terms “green bubbles”, large, politically driven industrial projects that rely heavily on subsidies and frequently fail to live up to expectations. He has published in leading international journals on innovation and technology management and has contributed policy commentary as an editorial writer for Affärsvärlden, a prominent Swedish business magazine.

Christian is the author and co-editor of several influential books, including Questioning the Entrepreneurial State (2022) and Moonshots and the New Industrial Policy (2024), which together have been downloaded more than 400,000 times worldwide. His most recent work includes Northvoltkraschen (2025) and the book series Gröna Bubblor, which examine the risks and consequences of subsidised green megaprojects more closely.

Today, Christian is a sought-after speaker, advisor and commentator. His research-based insights offer a clear, accessible and often provocative perspective on innovation, industrial strategy and the challenges facing the global green transition.
